Aroma: Due to its intense scent, even when diluted, a little patchouli oil goes a long way. It is most commonly used as a base note in perfumes and is also prized as an excellent fixative (an ingredient that extends the life of other perfume ingredients). Patchouli has always been a bit tricky, mostly because it possesses such a distinct odour – an aroma that many people think they don’t like.

It blends well with Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Rose, Grapefruit, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Frankincense, Marjoram, Sandalwood, and Cedarwood.

History:

Although Patchouli native to Asia, its first applications were actually developed in South India, it was used mainly as a medicine while also finding use as an insect repellant and even in herbal teas! Hundreds of years later it found its way to the middle east via trade routes, but it wasn’t until much later in human history when it became an easily recognizable fragrance and commodity in Europe and the other western civilizations. That said it was a valuable commodity in ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun had ten gallons of this oil buried with him in his tomb!

A rather surprising and dark historical use, Patchouli was commonly used to mask the smell of human decomposition during funerals for the dead during the 17th to 19th centuries due to its intense scent, in fact the name Patchouli is believed to have come from the Hindi word ‘pacholi’, which means ‘to scent’.

During the early 1800’s, it found use as an insect repellent for keeping bugs at bay while transporting garments from Asia to the rest of the world. The scent doubled up as a mark of authenticity for genuine eastern fabrics, such as silk around the time. It became associated with high fashion and wealth – everybody wanted to smell like patchouli! In fact, it was so highly valued at this point that traders would exchange a pound of patchouli for a pound of gold.

Today, Patchouli essential oil has its many uses and benefits ranging from health and cosmetic to even spiritual and holistic. The oil can be used topically (applied to the skin) on hair, in fragrances and even in aromatherapy. When used in aromatherapy, Patchouli oil is used to create an atmosphere of relaxation. Some people use it during meditation and for spiritual enlightenment, others to relieve stress, anxiety and depression while boosting moods and also helping with Insomnia.

Pets:

Using essential oils on pets:

The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.

If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pets behavior, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of Rūt products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:

Single note essential oils:

  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Rosemary

Should you choose to use your ultrasonic diffuser in the presence of your pet, we recommend:

  • Using only small amounts of essential oils. 1-5 drops are our recommendation
  • Ensure the space is well ventilated with a window open slightly for fresh air
  • Always keep a door open so that the animal can enter and exit the room easily
  • Take note of how your pet responds at all times and if you notice your pet resisting an aroma, discontinue use and move them to a well-ventilated space
  • Be particularly mindful of pets that are in cages or enclosed spaces (including birds and small rodents) as they cannot leave the room if they become uncomfortable
