Geranium essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils used in aromatherapy due to the rich nourishing properties it holds. This stimulating and restorative oil promotes comfort and balance, both internally and externally. Geranium essential oil may help optimize oil production of the skin as well as reduce the size of enlarged pores, generally softening and clearing out our complexion. Used cosmetically or topically in general, Geranium Essential Oil is reputed to effectively eliminate dead cells, tighten the skin, promote the regeneration of new skin, and diminish signs of aging. Geranium oil is a wonderful essential oil for use in balancing the skin’s production of sebum and in helping with acne. Geranium Essential Oil is astringent, and it can also be helpful with hemorrhoids and varicose veins. Aromatically and emotionally, Geranium Essential Oil is a soothing and balancing oil, and it can be helpful with anxiety and depression. However, using too much could potentially have a stimulating effect for some, so it’s an oil to use lightly until you become more acquainted with it.

Aromatherapy:

One of the top benefits of Geranium Essential Oil is definitely its mood-boosting yet soothing abilities. Add 8 to 10 drops in a diffuser or burner for the ultimate aromatherapy session.

Goodbye stress & anxiety:

Geranium essential oil is a go-to natural choice for reducing stress and anxiety. Many studies have shown that Geranium Essential oil carries potent anxiety-reducing, mood-enhancing and pain-relieving properties. It does so by reducing the levels of cortisol in the body (aka the stress hormones). To reduce stress, simply add a few drops of Geranium essential oil to your diffuser or oil burner to relax and unwind after a long day – or optimally, by your bed before sleeping. You can also apply the Geranium Essential Oil topically for the same benefits, but make sure to do a patch test before to ensure there are no allergic reactions.

Relax and unwind:

Geranium Essential Oil has been used for many years to promote relaxation and peace of mind. To get the best relaxation benefits, simply add a few drops to a hot bath or add it to your body lotion or massage oil for the ultimate aromatherapy massage. The anti-inflammatory properties of Geranium oil will help soothe any tired muscles and reduce any swelling.

Skin Vitality:

Due to its formidable invigorating, repairing, and anti-oxidant properties, Geranium Essential Oil is a great additive to your daily skin routine. It is a mild essential oil and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, dry, and oily skin types. It helps restore the skin’s natural glow, protect the skin from free radical damage and oxidative stress, soothe irritated skin, and make the skin soft and supple.

Keep aging at bay:

We all know that anti-oxidants are essential to keeping our skin youthful. Luckily, Geranium Essential oil is packed with them! Incorporate those beautiful anti-oxidants in your skincare routine by adding a few drops of Geranium Essential Oil to your daily moisturizer or face oil

Insect Repellant:

Geranium essential oil is very useful when it comes to keeping unwanted insects from wandering into your home. Thanks to some compounds found in Geranium essential oil, it acts as a great natural alternative for repelling insects. To make it your own, add a few drops to some cotton balls and place them in corners where you find a lot of insects crawling in. If you are tending to your garden or walking outside, add some Geranium essential oil to a carrier oil and rub it in your skin to keep the insects away.

But it’s also grown in Algiers, Morocco – and in Grasse, we saw Chanel experimenting with growing geranium in their fields.  Geranium’s used in colognes, herbal scents, florals and chypre fragrances.

History:

With its gorgeous green leaves and fabulous vibrant flowers, these flowery beauties are not just bursting with color but are low maintenance too, which is what makes them so popular, especially for beginners. There are more than 250 species, from zonal geraniums that form the backbone of summer bedding, to trailing geranium (ivy-leaved types) perfect for hanging baskets, and beautiful regal geraniums which are known for their showy, ruffled flowers.

Pelargoniums are native to South Africa, but were brought to Europe in the 17th century, and the first cultivation for distillation of the essential oil was in France. The plant was subsequently re-exported to the French colonies in Africa and elsewhere, and then more widely.

Native to southern Africa where they have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, geraniums were beloved by the Victorians, and can now be found blooming in gardens across Europe and North America. Geranium essential oil, which is steam-extracted from the whole plant, is found in skincare products, fragrances and traditional remedies. It is known for its lovely, rose-like fragrance, as well as its beneficial effect on skin and the emotions.

Geranium essential oil is thought to help balance the heart chakra. Geranium essential oil is considered a pitta oil, which can cool and calm the mind and body, whether from physical inflammation and overheating, or mental and spiritual distress and over-stimulation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, geranium is thought to have an affinity for wood and earth, with a focus on the liver, heart, and spleen meridians.

Pets:

Using essential oils on pets:

The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.

If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pets behavior, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of Rūt products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:

Single note essential oils:

  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Rosemary

Should you choose to use your ultrasonic diffuser in the presence of your pet, we recommend:

  • Using only small amounts of essential oils. 1-5 drops are our recommendation
  • Ensure the space is well-ventilated with a window open slightly for fresh air
  • Always keep a door open so that the animal can enter and exit the room easily
  • Take note of how your pet responds at all times and if you notice your pet resisting an aroma, discontinue use and move them to a well-ventilated space
  • Be particularly mindful of pets that are in cages or enclosed spaces (including birds and small rodents) as they cannot leave the room if they become uncomfortable
