Grapefruit essential oil is made through a process called cold-pressing, where oils are extracted from the fruit’s peel. This oil can then be used in aromatherapy or applied topically to potentially benefit your health.

Grapefruit Essential Oil is often used when looking to reduce minor pain and inflammation as well as reduce the presence of unwanted bacteria. Because of its excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, Grapefruit Oil is an overall excellent skin tonic and an indispensable ingredient in skin care products intended for oily skin. Its clarifying properties can be beneficial for diminishing acne.

Grapefruit Essential Oil potential benefits include:

  • boosts mood
  • relieves stress
  • curbs appetite
  • improves skin health
  • acts as an antibacterial or antimicrobial

Reduce Inflammation:

Grapefruit Oil is sometimes used in aromatherapy as a natural analgesic. The anti-stress and antidepressant effects of this oil may have something to do with how it helps our bodies interpret our pain without panicking.

Clear & Healthy Skin:

Did you know? Grapefruit oil is one of several essential oils that can kill harmful bacteria that can grow on your skin. This makes a good choice for topically cleaning small wounds and preventing acne. It also has protective properties, such as antioxidants, that may brighten and preserve your skin tone. However, like most citrus oils, it can cause skin sensitivity when in the sun. Make sure to apply sunscreen or avoid sun exposure.

Sniffles:

If you’re suffering from a sore throat, or the common cold, grapefruit essential oil can be used as a great home remedy. You can diffuse it in the room to help you breathe a bit more easily and help relax your mind as well as the muscles in your throat. Its antimicrobial properties can also kill the bacteria and germs found in the air.

Keep aging at bay:

When we think Citrus fruits, we think Vitamin C! And Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants known for cosmetic use. We all know that anti-oxidants are essential to keeping our skin youthful. Luckily, Grapefruit Essential oil is packed with them! Incorporate those beautiful anti-oxidants in your skincare routine by adding a few drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil to your daily moisturizer or face oil

Ditch the chemicals:

Grapefruit Essential oil’s anti-septic properties make it an ideal choice for those looking to switch from harmful household chemicals to more natural alternatives. It is also perfect for breaking down stubborn grease thanks to the natural acids found in it. You can use it to clean surfaces around the house or spray it to kill any bacteria in the air.

History:

Grapefruit is a citrus hybrid of the pomelo and sweet orange fruits. Citrus fruits naturally hybridize when two varieties are planted near each other. Most citrus is derived from random or intentional crossbreeding between the citron, pomelo and mandarin fruits and other citrus hybrids. Because those base fruits are native to Asia, the vast majority of hybrid citrus fruits are also from Asia. Grapefruit, however, is not.

Today, the USA is the world’s largest consumer of grapefruit, with large commercial groves in Florida, California, Texas and Arizona. But the grapefruit’s ancestor, the pomelo, comes from Indonesia and Malaysia. Grapefruit itself was first found in Barbados in the mid-1600s.

Grapefruit has been a household favorite in the United States since the 1940s, but that wasn’t always the case. While it first arrived in America in 1823, its thick skin and bitter flavor made it slow to take off. It wasn’t until Florida farmer John A. MacDonald established the first grapefruit nursery in Orange County in 1870 that the grapefruit began to gain interest.

By the late 1800s, grapefruit trees were being cultivated in southern Texas; by 1910, grapefruit was a major commercial fruit in the Rio Grande Valley, Arizona and California as well as Florida. The pink grapefruit and other varieties were developed, and in 1929 a Texas citrus grower discovered a mutated red grapefruit randomly growing on a pink grapefruit tree, which became the popular Ruby Red Grapefruit.

Fun Facts About Grapefruit:

  • The name for the Grapefruit was created by a Jamaican farmer when he noticed the fruit grew in clusters similar to grapes.
  • The Ruby Red grapefruit was accidentally discovered in Texas by citrus growers in 1929, making it the first variety to receive a United States patent.
  • Grapefruits are the official state fruit of Texas.
  • Grapefruits can be white, pink, or red.
  • Grapefruit trees take between 6 months and 13 months to produce fruit.
  • The citrus fruit is hand-picked when fully ripe.

 Pets:

Using essential oils on pets:

The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.

If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pets behavior, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of Rūt products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:

Single note essential oils:

  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Rosemary

Should you choose to use your ultrasonic diffuser in the presence of your pet, we recommend:

  • Using only small amounts of essential oils. 1-5 drops are our recommendation
  • Ensure the space is well ventilated with a window open slightly for fresh air
  • Always keep a door open so that the animal can enter and exit the room easily
  • Take note of how your pet responds at all times and if you notice your pet resisting an aroma, discontinue use and move them to a well-ventilated space
  • Be particularly mindful of pets that are in cages or enclosed spaces (including birds and small rodents) as they cannot leave the room if they become uncomfortable
