The Pinaceae, or pine family, are conifer trees or shrubs, including many of the well-known conifers of commercial importance such as cedars, firs, hemlocks, larches, pines and spruces. The Pinus sylvestris tree, also known as Scotch pine, is a tall coniferous evergreen tree that grows to the height of 131 feet and has characteristic orange-red bark and stiff blue-green needles.
Derived from pine tree needles, pine essential oil is uplifting and invigorating. It can lift your mood, relieve stress and ease tension. Especially energizing, Pine essential oil enhances concentration and promotes positivity.
Especially comforting in the winter season, Pine essential oil gives out a feeling of freshness and restoration. This purifying essential oil cleanses your body inside out; it drains out any toxins and provides a cool, refreshing effect. Pine essential oil supports clearer complexions primarily for oily troubled skin.
Commonly used in aromatherapy, Pine oil is famous for its woody scent which works great when it comes to clearing nasal airways and promoting deep and relaxing sleep. Its aroma is also famous for promoting an energized and refreshing feeling, which boosts the mood while keeping emotions calm and grounded. When used in a massage oil, it is known for helping promote good circulation and helps soothe tired, restless and aching muscles.
When used topically, Pine Essential Oil is known to be purifying and to help improve the appearance of acne and blemishes, making it especially suitable for inclusion in cosmetic formulations intended for oily skin. Also known as a powerful astringent, Pine Essential Oil makes a great addition to toning products to tighten the skin and impart a sense of invigoration.

This balance in turn strengthens the total hair follicle to promote healthy hair growth from within!

Old folk tales usually talk about the relationship between the height of the Pine tree and its love for sunlight – since it’s always trying to get taller to soak up more sun rays! This is a belief that is shared throughout many cultures, which also refer to it as “The Master of Light” and “The Torch Tree.” Accordingly, in the region of Corsica, it is burned as a spiritual offering so that it can emit a source of light. In some Native American tribes, the tree is called “The Watchman of the Sky.”
In history, the Pine tree’s needles were used as filling for mattresses, as they were believed to have the ability to protect against fleas and lice. In ancient Egypt, pine kernels, better known as Pine Nuts, were used in culinary applications. The needles were also chewed to protect against scurvy. In ancient Greece, Pine was believed to have been used by physicians like Hippocrates to address respiratory ailments. For other applications, the tree’s bark was also used for its believed ability to reduce symptoms of colds, to calm inflammation and headaches, to soothe sores and infections, and to ease respiratory discomforts.

Using essential oils on pets:
The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.
If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pets behavior, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of Rūt products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:
