History:

Melaleuca Oil, commonly known as Tea Tree Essential Oil, comes from the steam distillation of the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia plant. Native to Australia, Tea Tree grows mainly in New South Wales and Northern Queensland in modern-day plantations.

Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the tea tree. In addition to making tea, the aborigines used to crush the leaves and extract the oil which was then inhaled to treat colds and coughs. They also used it topically for healing the skin. Sailors also used to brew beer with the leaves.

Fun Facts About Tea Tree Essential Oil:

  • During WWII, Australian soldiers would carry tea tree oil in their first aid kits because of its effectiveness in treating wounds.
  • A person can treat acne, athlete’s foot, contact dermatitis or head lice using tea tree oil.
  • Tea tree oil has been shown to kill or repel insects. In some cases, it is as effective or more effective than standard insecticides or repellents.
  • Tea tree oil contains compounds that fight bacteria responsible for body odor. It can be used to make a safe and effective deodorant.

Studies:

Nail Fungus:

Tea tree oil, combined with butenafine hydrochloride, has also been found to effectively treat a fungal nail infection. Researchers created a cream with 2 percent butenafine hydrochloride and 5 percent tea tree oil, and then treated 40 of 60 participants with the cream. They found that 80 percent of patients using the medicated cream were cured.

Acne:

In the 1990s, researchers studied the efficacy of 5 percent tea tree oil in treating acne, compared to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide lotion, and found that both significantly improved acne in study participants. Though the tea tree oil takes longer to work, it has fewer side effects than the benzoyl peroxide.

Infections & Wounds:

In 2009, a study found that adding tea tree oil has powerful antimicrobial properties, especially when mixed with silver. So it is effective in treating minor cuts and wounds and keeping infections at bay.

It blends well with Lavender, Clary Sage, Peppermint, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Pine, Cypress, Ginger, Geranium, Marjoram, Juniper Berry, Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Chamomile.

Pets:

Using essential oils on pets:

The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.

If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pets behavior, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of R?t products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:

Single note essential oils:

  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Rosemary

Should you choose to use your ultrasonic diffuser in the presence of your pet, we recommend:

  • Using only small amounts of essential oils. 1-5 drops are our recommendation
  • Ensure the space is well ventilated with a window open slightly for fresh air
  • Always keep a door open so that the animal can enter and exit the room easily
  • Take note of how your pet responds at all times and if you notice your pet resisting an aroma, discontinue use and move them to a well-ventilated space
  • Be particularly mindful of pets that are in cages or enclosed spaces (including birds and small rodents) as they cannot leave the room if they become uncomfortable
