Chamomile is a gentle and unassuming herb that has been used in teas, skincare, haircare and as a general part of health and wellbeing throughout history. Both the Romans and Egyptians extolled its virtues and today natural beauty lovers continue to celebrate its plant power.
In ancient Rome, Roman Chamomile was used to help soldiers take courage during times of war. Since then, Roman Chamomile essential oil has become popular for its sweet, soothing nature. It’s said that the earliest recorded use of chamomile for medical purposes was in 1550 B.C.E. It featured in Eber’s Papyrus – an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge.
The Greeks and Egyptians used crushed chamomile flowers to treat the skin conditions erythema and eczema caused by dry, harsh weather. It was also used to ease fever. The famous physician, Hippocrates even refers to it in his writings.
In the 10th century, chamomile was recorded as one of the nine sacred herbs of the Lacnunga, an ancient Anglo-Saxon herbal manuscript.
Chamomile tea, used as a tonic and an antiseptic and in many herbal remedies, is made from English, or Roman, chamomile or German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). Several species are cultivated as garden ornamentals, especially golden marguerite, or yellow chamomile (Cota tinctoria).
Many members of the genus Anthemis, containing more than 100 species of Eurasian herbs, are also known as chamomile. They characteristically have yellow or white ray flowers and yellow disk flowers in compact flower heads. Mayweed, or stinking chamomile (A. cotula), is a strong-smelling weed that has been used in medicines and insecticides.
Today we continue to use it in cookery, cosmetics, teas and skincare products. It’s especially well known for calming the nerves and soothing the skin.
Chamomile has a history of use as a traditional, herbal treatment for conditions such as:
A 2014 animal study evaluated the effects of German chamomile extract on diarrhoea. The study’s authors found that chamomile oil offered protection against diarrhoea and fluid accumulation in the intestines.
A 2018 articleTrusted Source investigated how Roman chamomile extract affected the healing of an infected wound in rats. Chamomile ointment had significantly higher wound healing and antibacterial activity compared to tetracycline ointment and placebo.
A 2017 study assessed the short-term treatment of generalized anxiety using chamomile extract. Researchers found that after eight weeks, 58.1 percent of participants reported a reduction of their anxiety symptoms.
Depression and anxiety often occur together. One studyTrusted Source used oral German chamomile extract in people with anxiety and depression.
Researchers observed a significant reduction in depression symptoms after eight weeks of treatment in the group that were given chamomile extract.

Using essential oils on pets:
The ability to tolerate essential oils is dependent on many factors, including plant species, product, dose, and route of application. Essential oil use cases show the most significant risk of toxicity is from direct skin application on your pet’s skin – these same cases also share that a large volume was applied directly and neat (pure without a carrier) to the pet’s skin. Knowing that there is a risk in using these oils to your pet’s fur or skin, we strongly recommend consultation with your veterinarian or animal care specialist prior to applying or exposure to any of our products.
If you’ve chosen to use essential oils around your pet, we first recommend taking note of your pet’s behaviour, contacting your vet with any concerns, and the below list of Rūt products that we feel are the most pet-friendly:
