Melaleuca Oil, commonly known as Tea Tree Essential Oil, comes from the steam distillation of the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia plant. Native to Australia, Tea Tree grows mainly in New South Wales and Northern Queensland in modern-day plantations.
Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the tea tree. In addition to making tea, the aborigines used to crush the leaves and extract the oil which was then inhaled to treat colds and coughs. They also used it topically for healing the skin. Sailors also used to brew beer with the leaves.
Tea tree oil, combined with butenafine hydrochloride, has also been found to effectively treat a fungal nail infection. Researchers created a cream with 2 percent butenafine hydrochloride and 5 percent tea tree oil, and then treated 40 of 60 participants with the cream. They found that 80 percent of patients using the medicated cream were cured.
In the 1990s, researchers studied the efficacy of 5 percent tea tree oil in treating acne, compared to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide lotion, and found that both significantly improved acne in study participants. Though the tea tree oil takes longer to work, it has fewer side effects than the benzoyl peroxide.
In 2009, a study found that adding tea tree oil has powerful antimicrobial properties, especially when mixed with silver. So it is effective in treating minor cuts and wounds and keeping infections at bay.
